The invaluable richness of native varieties of trees and vines is the subject of three new works edited by ELGO-DIMITRA researchers

1.    Almonds, apricots, plums, cherries, peaches, pears!!! Get to know and prefer the local varieties of these fruits

Discover the special characteristics of the local varieties of fruit trees of mainland and islands of Greece through the book entitled "Local Varieties of Fruit Trees", edited by Dr. Pavlina Drogoudi, researcher at the Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources (IPBGR), in the framework of the "Fruitrees2Safegauard" research project”.

It is an illustrated guide to phenotypic characteristics of local varieties of almond, apricot, plum, cherry, peach and pear found and recorded during exploratory expeditions in 32 regions of mainland and island Greece, with the contribution of residents of the regions studied.

The Department of Deciduous Fruit Trees in Naoussa and the Department of Nut Trees Akrodryon in Vardates, Fthiotida, of the IPBGR, since their foundation, have started the creation of conservation collections of local and foreign varieties of deciduous fruit trees and participate in a number of European programs with the aim of recording genetic diversity and highlighting and utilization of the special characteristics of Greek varieties. A wandering in the Greek literature led to finding, saving and recording the names of various grape varieties of the Greek area, which reappear after years of absence, or have now disappeared or are peculiarities of the dopiolalia and are presented in the book entitled "Greek grape varieties" edited Dr. G. 3.    Citrus fruits, products of high nutritional value/2.500 years of cultivation in the Greek area

The rescue, evaluation, and preservation of the native genetic material of all citrus species, with the aim of highlighting their unique agronomic and quality characteristics, was the subject of the GoCitrus research project and is included in the Monograph of Citrus Varieties, edited by Dr. V. Ziogas, researcher of the Institute of Olive Tree, Subtropical Crops and Viticulture.

The accurate identification of phenotypic traits of indigenous citrus varieties (orange, tangerine, lemon, bergamot, citrus) is of great importance for the selection of dominant genes for future targeted cultivar genetic improvement.
