The institute

The Research Institute of Animal Science (RIAS) is one of the 11 Institutes of the General Directorate of Agricultural Research of ELGO-DIMITRA. RIAS was founded in 1951 in Paralimni of Giannitsa and includes the Department of Beekeeping in Agios Mamas, Chalkidiki.

RIAS conducts research on productive animals and bees in the following areas:
  1. Nourishment physiology and nutrition
  2. Breeding of farm animals and domestic bee populations
  3. Genetic improvement and conservation of animal genetic resources 
  4. Breeding, ethology and welfare of farm animals
  5. Quality products of animal origin
  6. Applications of biotechnology in animal production and beekeeping
  7. Applications of precision beekeeping systems
  8. Biology, pathology, and physiology of the bee
  9. Biological control of bee diseases
  10. Biodiversity and genetic improvement of domestic bee populations

  • Analytical laboratory for biochemical, hematological, and genetic analyses
  • Laboratory for chemical analysis of feed
  • Experimental breeding of domestic sheep breeds
