Research Director at the Hellenic Agricultural Organization DIMITRA (ELGO-DIMITRA) and director of the Veterinary Research Institute (VRI) since 2014. AZ graduated from the veterinary medicine of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, he holds a post graduated diploma in microbiology and infectious diseases of animals. AZ obtained his PhD from the Aristotle University in poultry salmonellosis with emphasis in salmonella enteritidis.

His research interests include the development and application of improved therapeutic and preventive regimens for the treatment of infectious diseases in productive animals, environmental microbiology, the study of bacterial resistance to antibiotics, the development of methods for the detection and prevention of clinical and subclinical mastitis, as well as the study and research of zoonotic diseases for the detection, identification, and epidemiological investigation of pathogens that cause foodborne and waterborne diseases. He has published 70 articles (cross-references = 1186, h-index = 20, Google Scholar). He has participated in the implementation of 31 national and international research projects as well as in project assignments from the Private sector.
